Guide or Breeder?

In the last post I wrote how Dulcie's heart murmur had sorted itself out and that that meant she was definitely still a candidate for something that is colloquially known as Breeder watch. A friend of mine (you should all really check out his blog linked here: he thinks that some people won't agree with him, but his passion for wildlife is so apparent through his blog that I think most readers of my blog will enjoy it. I know I do.) basically asked what it meant to be a breeder. I'm paraphrasing a lot, but that was the general gist of the question.

So, for new readers of the blog, after the puppy has spent "x" amount of time with their puppy raiser (for GDB it's anywhere between when the puppy is 15-18 months of age) they go back in for formal training. What is the point of this formal training? Well, puppy raisers don't teach their puppies actual Guide work. We teach them the basics of being a good dog and get them used to being out in public. So, I'll teach my puppies basic house manners and commands (e.g. sit, down stay, etc.) and take them with me to restaurants, grocery stores, clothing stores, malls, etc. The actual Guide work is taught by licensed instructors once the puppy has learned all the basics and we are all confident that they have a shot at being a Guide (it takes a lot and not every puppy can do it, but that's another post).

When the puppy is done with the puppy in training stage and is ready to move onto their formal training there are two possible routes. The first is that they will go straight into harness training. They get an extensive health check and if everything checks out OK they go through the phases of harness training. Each school does it differently. At GDB we have 8 phases of formal training and in each case the dog learns something new that will help them be a great Guide along with fine tuning the basics. Once they make it to phase 8 and pass their final blindfold test they are considered "class ready" and just need to wait for their perfect person to come around. (I've always thought that there shouldn't be a phase 8.5 or something to indicate that the dog has passed their final exam and is just waiting because we aren't told when this happens and seeing them in 8 week after week after week can be nerve wracking.) If all goes well, in our new system, the dog should be finished with their training in 2-3 months and then the rest is just a waiting game.

The second route of formal training is going into Breeder Evals. I sometimes call this the "Breeder Black Hole." Why? Because we don't hear a thing about the dogs in breeder evals until they either pass or fail as a breeder and the evals take about the same time as formal training. So, what I am about to give you is a real basic idea of what happens when a dog goes in for breeder evaluations. When they go in for breeder evals they also get an extensive health exam, but this one is much more intense than that given to dogs just going into formal harness training. This is because we don't want any odd genes that may pass on diseases in our breeding colony, but they could still be used as a guide. So, if they pass all their health and temperament exams (and there are quite a few of them) they make it as a breeder. Once a dog is officially selected as a breeder a "Breeder Custodian" (BCs) is found for them. The BCs are families who take these dogs in and agree to bring them in whenever Guide Dogs needs them for a "date". Because of this obligation, GDB has made rules as to how close you can live to the San Rafael campus to be eligible to become a BC. If the dog is a female they have an average of 4 litters (unless they are really, really prolific) and if they are males they can breed for as long as they are turning out a good number of guides and breeders. If they don't make it as a breeder one of two things can happen. They will either be spayed and put into harness training or they will be spayed and career changed. The latter usually happens for some sort of health issue but can happen for temperament issues.

A dog that is on breeder watch as a puppy can be cut from it at any time. If the breeding department had it their way, every puppy would come in for formal training "intact". Of course, sometimes the only way a puppy has a chance of making it through the program at all will be if they are spayed/neutered to get their hormones under control. This is what happened to my first and third puppies, Freya and Hilly. Both Dylan puppies and Dylan was the most prolific breeder at one stage so they wanted to keep as many of his pups intact as possible. Unfortunately for them, they were both too hormonal and distracted. The Breeding department does select litters to stay intact due to their parentage. Usually first time breeders won't have all puppies in their litter stay intact because they don't know if their genes produce suitable temperaments. Most of the time, if it's a first breeder, they will only keep the females in the litter intact (usually, not always).

Why do I want to raise a Breeder so bad? I'm glad you asked. It's because you get to help name the puppies and it's the only time every you can request a specific puppy. So, if Dulcie were to become a breeder I could request a puppy from her first litter and GDB would give it to me (since she's a female I could probably request a puppy from all of her litters; males tend to have many more litters than females). And I absolutely LOVE helping to name these puppies.

This is why I was so happy that Dulcie's heart murmur sorted itself out. She has an absolutely wonderful temperament and is a super stable puppy. I think that the breeding department would really, really like her and it would be such a shame if she didn't at least get the chance to compete with her brothers and sisters for the breeder position.

Compete? Oh yes, I forgot to mention that. Which dogs become breeders really depends on what the breeding department is looking for at what time. They need to keep a balance between yellow and black labs so that we can turn out more or less equal amounts of black and yellow labs every year. This is because we never know what our "clients" will want. Some request black (good on them!) and some request yellow (I'm sure they'll see the light eventually). This has absolutely nothing to do with whether black or yellow labs make the better Guide. For some, it's that they still have some usable vision and would like to see their dog so they request a yellow lab and for others it's that their first Guide was a black lab and they fell in love with them so now they only want black labs. It's just a preference thing. Anyway, the breeding department does not usually take a whole litter for breeding (maybe for color, more likely because they want a mix of genes) if they are all intact. They will choose the very best candidate. Maybe two females are exactly what they are looking for but one has a higher hip score so that one will become a breeder over the one with the lower hip score. However, with goldens, I have seen them take multiple breeders from one litter multiple times. It might have something to do with the fact that our Golden population in the breeding colony had to be "altered" a while ago and we are still working back to it's full size. It might have something to do with the fact that if you have stable, well mannered goldens you want them producing more stable, well mannered goldens (note: goldens tend to be a little softer than the labs and are less adaptable; again this is usually not always). So, in the case of Dulcie, it may be that multiple pups are pulled for breeding from her litter.

That was probably the most long winded answer to a simple question and much more information than was wanted, but...well I write long winded answers.

Having a Blast...

Thinking of names for Hestia's first litter! Letter is "F"...which, personally, I think is one of the best letters. Haha! Thought of quite a few so far and I'm sure I'll think of a few more before tomorrow. I'm trying to find a Goddess name to fit with Hestia (who is the Greek goddess of home and hearth). So far my search has been fruitless, but I'm sure I'll find one in the end. Too bad Freya (who is a goddess of love and fertility) is taken. Haha!

Anyway, they were born on Saturday. 4 males and 4 females; 4 yellow labs and 4 black labs. I'm really excited to get to meet some of them at Fun Day this year!

Reann's Pup "Becky"

This is Becky. *smiles*
Becky. One of Reann's baby black labs.
Becky is from Reann's first litter. Becky is Rocco's niece! *big grin* Isn't she cute!? I also know her daddy. Her dog daddy is Alonzo and he was raised in the other group in town. He has the most big, gorgeous lab head you've ever seen. I think Becky looks more like Alonzo than Reann. She's got a nice, square head.

I also heard the other two females' names. There is a Brooke and Brie. I don't know any of the male names though. I'm hoping to find out at some point.

Today

"I'd be happy with you getting a puppy in March..."

Those were Graham's exact words! To say that I'm a little excited would be a bit of an understatement. I'm so happy that I finally asked about getting a puppy of my own. He asked if I had any questions and I said no because I couldn't think of any. But of course as soon as I got home I thought of a thousand and one! Haha! They're just things that I automatically assumed would be the same here as they are at home and realised that they may not be. So, I'm writing out and email to send to him with the various questions.

Besides getting that good piece of news today I also finished up the boarder's agreement which means that Vale can come of an extended visit now. We've got one set up for about a week in the near future. *grin*

I don't know exactly when I'll be getting or what breed, but I know that near the end of March I'll be getting a new puppy to raise and mold into a good Guide.

I also thought I'd share this link. Reann's first litter is up on the Guide Dog Blog! The sire was "Alonzo" who was actually raised by the other group in town! Enjoy looking at Rocco's neices and nephews!

Estee's First Litter and Pros&Cons

Estee's "G" puppies are finally home with their BKs. *big grin* Here are pictures of all of them. There's one black pup amongst the five yellow pups. There appears to be 3 males and 3 females though one of the names isn't really gender specific so I'm not too entirely sure. With that said, yes, I do know all of the names. But, I'm not going to post them up as I don't want to ruin the surprise for any raiser who might be getting an Ozzie/Estee puppy. None of my names were used *sad face* but they're all great names. There's one little girl's name that I absolutely LOVE!

The little black puppy of her litter. This is the one that isn't gender specific, but I think he's male.

A little yellow female. She's got a wonderful name.
A little yellow male. He looks like the biggest to me.
Another yellow male. He's got my favourite out of the male names.
A yellow female. She's darker than the rest.
A little, yellow female. She's the one with my favourite name.
Aren't they so cute! And they're so little. I think they're either just under a month or just over a month. If I didn't have puppy fever before I definitely have it now. Speaking of puppy fever...

Yesterday I couldn't focus on studying. I have an exam today and an exam tomorrow and studying much more seems a little pointless. I'm going to do as well as I'm going to. That doesn't mean that I'm not doing a last minute cram session tonight with a friend for the Psychology exam, but last night was really hard for me. So, I got to thinking about what I should do about a puppy of my own. Since I couldn't make a final decision I did what I always do when I just can't decide. I made a Pros&Cons list to clearly understand where I stand at this moment. Here's a photo of my pros and cons list.
My pros and cons list.
My pros are "German Shepherd possiblity, A healthy distraction, puppy breath, expercise again, stress reliever, get it off my mind, it's who I am, and lif is boring without a puppy. My cons are "Needing to balance between school and puppy, 4 hour roleplaying games, little space in the flat, social life, the costs, the heart ache, and I would have to do more cleaning." As you can see, the pros outweigh the cons by number if only by one. At this moment I'm trying to decide if the cons outweigh the pros in gravity though. I've raised 3 puppies and I know how much time it takes...especially a baby puppy. But I know I'm up to the task. What did I decide? Well, it really is a tie so I decided to email Graham after my exams are finished and say something like, "I would really like a puppy of my own and I think I'm ready for one. I've been thinking about it and the best time for me to get a puppy would be at the beginning of my spring break which starts March 23. But I would like to puppysit once before fully committing. Would it be possible to put me on a list for a puppy for the end of March but take me off if, after I puppysit, I realise that it's not the right time for a puppy full time? Then the next best time would be beginning of June since it's the start of summer break and I'll be here for all but 3 weeks of the summer." I'm also going to say, as much as it kills me, that I would prefer an older puppy. One that is done with shots and can go everywhere...but I also want anything but a Lab. Haha! So, I could to a baby puppy if that's necessary for a not Lab. But know that the longest I'll have to wait for a puppy is five months is really exciting!

Also, I'm having trouble with my comments on this blog. I can view them, but I can't reply to them. Someone (can't quite remember the name right now) asked me to send them my email address so they could invite me to their blog. I'm just gonna post it up here for you since I can't find you on my followers and I can't reply to the comment. dramaqueenEEA92@gmail.com

Phase Report

Halette     45Y4     LAB     F     8

The next graduation date for the San Rafael campus is January 21, 2012. I have a feeling that Halette is probably not going to make it into that one as the students, retrain and newbies, have all received their dogs already. It's a possibility, but not a big one. So, the one after this next one is February 4, 2012. Keeping my fingers crossed for you Halette! *grin* There's a complete list of graduation dates online. If any of you haven't been to a graduation I suggest you go. Even if you didn't raise a puppy it's completely moving.

I've been wanting to post some pictures of Estee's litter, but she and pups haven't gone home to the breeder keepers yet. Yes, they raise the pups at home instead of keeping them and their breeder in the kennels. I have to say...Freya was better at being crated that Rocco was right from the word go. I like to think it was because of all they do with the pups when they're at their home. We also get lots of pictures of puppies. Freya's welcome pack (which includes a small bag of puppy food, a nylon leash, all of the paperwork needed for vets and such, report templates, her big girl collar, and a few other things) also came with a little envelope with a CD of pictures and how to contact Belle's breeder keepers. Inside was a little note telling me how to ID my pup. And thus started the friendship. They even sent me a picture CD of the "E" litter since I had been hoping to snag Epic and my 2nd puppy. Though I wouldn't change my big, handsome boy for anything. *smile* Oh, anyway, I've been wanting to put up some pictures of the cuties, but they don't have them home yet. Skin rashes or something that GDB wanted to keep them at the kennels for. Which is totally understandable, but I'm waiting on pins and needles to see them! I can't imagine how the BKs feel. Haha! Oh, yes, forgot to say. The letter is "G". I believe all the puppies have been named, but I got to throw in a few suggestions! That was a lot of fun and I really hope they used one of my names. I won't be posting the names until all of them have left for their raiser homes. Don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone!

Estee's a Mommy

Well, Momma Belle has got some grandpuppies out there! I've just seen pictures of Estee's first litter! They look so cute, but what puppy doesn't? There are five yellow puppies and one black puppy. I find it quite interesting that there is only one black puppy, but she was bred to a yellow boy. And, hey! I knew that the Breeder Keepers were hoping for some more yellow puppies. They sure got them!

I can't wait until I see pictures of little puppies in the play yard!

Phase Report

Halette    45Y4     LAB     F     8

 Lance      4Z66     GLD     M    0

Belle puppy EPIC is IN CLASS!!!! and will (fingers crossed) be graduting on the San Rafael campus on December 10, 2011! Hooray! Go Epic! I also heard that they saw 5 to 6 puppies in ESTEE! She was bred with male yellow lab OZZIE. I know her breeder keepers are hoping that that might mean some more yellow puppies, but if she didn't get the yellow gene from Jay or Belle then she'll be having all black labs.

Phase Report

Halette     45Y4     LAB     F     5

Hermes    46Y1     LAB     M    8

Hestia     LAB     F     GDB Breeder!

Belle puppy EPIC is in phase 8 this week! Hooray! I'm really excited about Hestia being a breeder. Right after I found out the Reann had made it a breeder I found out that Hestia had also made it as a breeder. Hoping for a Reann or a Hestia or an Estee puppy when I get back! That would be great. You know what would also be great? If they bred one of them to a Golden male. *wink*

Also a big shout out to Snickers who is now back for formal training!

A New Breeder!

I like going to the official Guide Dogs for the Blind blog occassionally to see if they've got the new littermate photos up from the whelping kennel. With the "Litter Announcements" is also a list of new breeder dogs that have been added to the GDB breeding colony.

The new Litter Announcements were added yesterday and I just got around to seeing them today. I took a look at the darn cute puppy photos which of course made me want a puppy all the more. Then I looked down at the new breeders list. First off I noticed the two puppies who graduated as Breeders this past weekend who were raised in the other group in my town. Just a little shout out to Medford (MLGX) and Heloise (FYL)! Also, Estee (FBL) who was from Belle's last litter ever was on the list too, but we all know that she was accepted as a Breeder. Then I skimmed the rest of the group, not thinking I would find anything interesting, but guess what name I noticed on the breeder list? No guesses? I'll just tell you then.

Reann!

Reann is Rocco's sister, and I think looks a lot like Rocco. So far this litter has two Guides and one Breeder! Go "R"s!
